Description

The Ellerslie area is located in Southeast Edmonton, with communities that are situated to the south of Anthony Henday Drive and to the east of Gateway Boulevard/Calgary Trail. This section had been mostly agricultural lands prior to appropriation and development in early 2000. These newer developments are largely residential and while some construction is still ongoing, the inception of these sectors has taken place over a relatively short period of time.

Since 2008, the majority of these neighbourhoods are well populated and enjoy a rich culture and thriving community atmosphere.

As a planned suburb of Edmonton, the Ellerslie area is designed to be family friendly and to offer all the amenities of city living in a more rural environment. This sector has a number of natural environmental aspects that have been incorporated into the living spaces, which makes it quite attractive to residents of all ages. Educational facilities are already well established for this subdivision, including the Ellerslie Campus Elementary and Junior High School, the Michael Strembitsky School, and the Dukes Ranches Schools. Further educational facilities are planned, but parents will find institutions that are suitable for children of all ages throughout the communities of Ellerslie.

This area is comprised of five neighborhoods at present. These include the actual community of Ellerslie, the Orchards at Ellerslie, Charlesworth, Summerside, and Walker. Each of these residential communities have been designed to offer safe walking trails and good outdoor recreations to residents. This includes the natural water features that are prevalent throughout the countryside, as well as centrally located parks with facilities such as sporting fields, playgrounds, and preserve lands. Nearby, the Multi-Sport Tournament and Recreation Site has furthered space for cycling, skating, and fitness, and the Pioneer Meadows Golf Course is another attraction for residents to enjoy.

While public transportation by way of bus lines is very strong for the Ellerslie area, this section has also been approved for LRT line expansion. As of 2010, the Capital Line/ South LRT to Heritage Valley became an accepted project, and residents in the Ellerslie district can expect improved modes for commuting once that extension is completed.

Many of the residents in Ellerslie do hold jobs within the city of Edmonton, although growing employment in industrial and commercial sections that are located nearby also give inhabitants the chance to work locally. Many of the jobs include education, construction, healthcare, retail, and some agricultural and forestry positions. For driving commuters, the major thoroughfares of Calgary Trail and Gateway Boulevard supply a quick ride into the city center, as do other major roads such as 91st Street and 50th Street.

Ellerslie is a rural suburb that gives residents the chance to enjoy outdoor recreations in a safe and clean environment. It is close to the South Edmonton Common for shopping and entertainment, as well as other urban amenities. The individual communities offer residents a living space that is peaceful and quiet, yet is still within about five kilometers of the downtown area. This makes for an ideal location for residents of many dispositions.
