Description

The NAIT area is situated in North Central Edmonton and includes a number of residential areas that surround the campus and academic facilities. This urban space is strongly established and allows residents to be close to city amenities and businesses. The communities of NAIT radiate out from the central institution and include Alberta Avenue, Delton, Eastwood, Elmwood Park, Parkdale, Central McDougall, Prince Rupert, Queen Mary Park, Spruce Avenue, and Westwood.

Much of this region was initially a part of the Hudson Trading Company lands, and along with shipping and trading, it was largely used for agriculture through the early 1900s. As the population rose, many of the communities within the NAIT area became incorporated into North Central Edmonton around 1910. While this suburb was officially considered an Edmonton district, the greater construction and population of the sub-developments rose in the 1940s.

The name for this area comes from the situation of the NAIT campus in the northern business sector. This polytechnic college was founded in 1959 and the campus has expanded to become one of the defining characteristics of North Central Edmonton. The initial promotion was to generate better training and specialization for the industries that were becoming a driving force in Edmonton’s economy. As businesses have changed, the NAIT curriculum has also evolved, and this campus serves the greater area with undergraduate and graduate classes, as well as continuing education and adjunct services for high schools.

The NAIT area is very vibrant culturally, with a number of libraries, such as the McNally Library, and exhibits at the Alberta Aviation Museum. Other popular attractions include the Rexall Place for stadium events such as concerts and sports tournaments, and Northlands Park, which features horse racing.

As a largely suburban and residential section that also incorporates business sections into the design, the NAIT area caters to many families that live there. Education for the region is well rounded, and the Edmonton Public School Board is located within the suburb. Some of the private and public schools for children include St. Joseph’s High School, the St. Catherine School, and Spruce Avenue School. Higher educational facilities are also located around the NAIT campus with academic services from Vanguard College, and trade training through Ernest’s at NAIT Culinary School.

The NAIT area lends itself to public transportation. Bus lines run throughout the suburb, and three LRT stations are located within a kilometer of most of the communities in the region. This includes Coliseum Station to the north, Churchill Station in the south, and centrally located Stadium station. While driver commuting on the major freeways that cross the NAIT suburb is always an option, many of the residents opt for the bus and LRT lines.

This region maintains a good suburban feel that is inspired by the agricultural history of the area and the retention of open spaces within the city. While NAIT can be a good residential space for inhabitants who commute to the adjacent downtown, there is also much employment that is gained through commercial and academic enterprises directly in the suburb. This makes housing here attractive to both families and single professionals.
