Description

The greater area of Bonnie Doon is situated to the south-east of the North Saskatchewan River and occupies a large part of the South East Edmonton area. This highly desirable area has been a part of the city since 1912 and was primarily farmlands, trading posts, and the residence of homesteaders through the late 1800s.

Although the area known as Bonnie Doon is within about two kilometers of central Edmonton, the natural boundary of the river has helped to keep the communities within the suburb more rural in the atmosphere. This is very much in keeping with the agricultural and pioneering history of the area and is a source of great pride to the residents of the various neighborhoods. Residential subdivisions in the greater Bonnie Doon area include the community of Bonnie Doon itself, Cloverdale, Holyrood, Idylwylde, Kenilworth, Ottewell, and Strathearn. Each of these areas has a distinct culture and environment, making them attractive to residents and strongly involved in community integration.

The entire Bonnie Doon area is considered to be very family friendly, with safe streets and parks to play in and good educational facilities within each of the communities. Some of the area schools include Rutherford School, Ecole Publique Gabrielle-Roy, Edmonton Public Schools, and Waverly School. This gives parents a number of public and private institutions to choose from, including lessons which promote bi-lingual studies.

Bonnie Doon gives residents good access to services and entertainment in downtown Edmonton as well as South Central Edmonton. The Churchill Station and Central Station LRT stops are less than a kilometer away, across the river. Extensive bus service also connects residents with these transit hubs and with stops in the adjacent communities. However, amenities are also locally situated, with the expansive Bonnie Doon Mall and the Capilano Mall in Ottewell. The Bonnie Doon Leisure Centre has fitness equipment and activity programs for health and relaxation, and a number of arts and dance schools are also prevalent for extracurricular studies.

The community leagues within Bonnie Doon are not only active in sponsoring events for the residents, but also for helping to preserve the natural lands that make up a large part of this suburb. The preserve park of Mill Creek Ravine and parts of the river valley to the north are a great draw for many residents who are outdoor enthusiasts. These open spaces are the destination for many family outings, as well as school trips and visitor attractions.

While a number of residents are attracted to living in Bonnie Doon because it is a peaceful and safe community with a lot of natural beauty, they are also appreciative of the easy commute into the Edmonton business centre. Professionals in Bonnie Doon also find employment in academic and healthcare settings in the University area to the west, and in the extensive industrial districts to the west. This gives great employment opportunities that may be locally based, making Bonnie Doon a prime location for families and professional singles from a number of disciplines.
