The area of Callingwood is located to the southwest of Edmonton city center. It spans a number of communities and includes many parks and preserve lands as well as parts of the Saskatchewan River Valley. Callingwood is one of the larger subdivision in the West Edmonton area.

This area had been largely industrial and underdeveloped through the mid 1900s, but with the influx of workers during the oil boom in the 1970s the area saw development into distinct communities that embrace the residential history of the area.

Callingwood communities are closely intertwined, and many municipal services overlap between them. This makes for a sense of cohesive identity with the residents in this area, and community leagues will often serve for more than one neighborhood. As much of Callingwood is within the Sakatchewan River valley, a strong focus on land stewardship and natural preservation is shared. This has led to the maintenance of area parks and wooded refuges within the suburban boundaries, as well as a reinforcement of public transportation access on existing roadways.

The greater Callingwood area is the home to many families and activities and attractions that bring people together is highly important within the area. Community gardens, skate parks, continuing education, and public festivals are all an integral aspect of this areas personality. Many events are held throughout the year that are also sponsored by the local YMCA and by the Boys and Girls Club. Inhabitants of Callingwood look forward to these activities, and volunteerism is a strong trait within this community.

A number of large parks and nature preserves are found throughout the Callingwood area. These are big attractions for both residents and visitors, and numerous trails along the river valley provide activity and peacefulness. Within the central areas of Callingwood, recreation centers such as the Jamie Platz YMCA and the Mayfield Figure Skating Club offer activities throughout the year. The Edmonton Public Library is also located within this suburb and the facility hosts events and lectures as well as a refuge for avid readers.

Callingwood presents an interesting residential area, as it is located within several kilometers of downtown Edmonton, but presents itself as a suburb that seems quite removed. This peaceful atmosphere is quite attractive to most of the residents, as it allows for a refuge even when work is located at the city center.

This strong focus on wellbeing and integration is also evident in the number of spas and holistic health centers that are located throughout the Callingwood suburb. The sense of living within the nature of the land translates into the businesses that populate the area as well as the attraction to community activities. For a city suburb that is surrounded by urban development, Callingwood offers a community that is dedicated to the progress of preservation.
