Description

Millcreek is one of those mature, centrally located areas that’s always popular with home-buyers. The area is found about five kilometers from the city centre. The area benefits by having the Mill Creek Ravine and the walking, running, dog off leash, bicycle riding, cross country skiing trails run through its center with the communities of Argyll, Ritchie, Avonmore, Hazeldean, and King Edward Park along both sides.

This entire area had once been First Nations Land, including members of Cree, Papaschase, and Blackfoot Nations. As settlers entered into the region, Millcreek became the site of industrial development, from hunting and meat packing to brickworks and other fabrication. The current area name is derived from this industrial usage, as large water wheels powered many of the facilities that rose up around the ravine.

The presence of industry also gave rise to a greater population of settlers, and this continued through the mid to late 1900s. In the 1960s, the preserve land itself became part of a contentious battle for land rights to construct a major thoroughfare. Residents and community leagues fought to keep the preserve land safe, as it represents a strong part of the culture within this suburb.

The eventual denial of the freeway construction would also lead to restoration efforts for the Millcreek area, as the ravine had become a dumping ground while its fate was being decided. Modern residents and community leagues take pride in this environment that is a part of their living space, and it is currently a popular wilderness recreation area, with trails, bike paths, and even a municipal pool and playground.

Milcreek is a family-friendly suburb, with established neighborhoods and street plans that lend themselves to pedestrian and bicycle travel. The ravine remains a central attraction for adults and children, and the overall environment is peaceful and naturally beautiful. Millcreek School, Donnan School, and St. James School are all well ranked educational facilities within the area. Daycare and pre-school is also easily accessible through community league programs and through private providers.

While some residents of Millcreek may commute into Edmonton for business, many also work in local businesses within the South Edmonton area. Healthcare and construction are two of the larger employment choices, but teaching, forestry sciences, and industrial fabrication are also strong as local job options. The University and Health Sciences LRT stations are located within three kilometer to the west of Millcreek and local bus services also allow commuters in this suburb to get around.

Millcreek also incorporates public parks and recreational centre into the four communities of the suburbs. This includes Donnan Arena and The Edmonton BMX Association for sports and activities. The legacy of good community leagues also continues into the present, and each community in Millcreek is known for high participation and good neighborhood integration.

Millcreek has become an attractive place for many families and single professionals, as it combines the pioneering spirit of industry that was held the first settlers with the respect for natural wilderness is taught by First Nations People.
