More About Buying A Home In Highlands Area - Edmonton, AB

This puts residents very close to the perks of the downtown area, but also affords inhabitants a good amount of peacefulness and seclusion, as well as proximity to natural beauty.

The greater Highlands area is slightly spread out, stretching almost as far as Downtown Edmonton, but also reaching nearly to the river bend of North East Edmonton.  The communities within this region include the actual neighborhood of Highlands, as well as Montrose, Newton, Bellevue, Cromdale, and Virginia Park.  Each of these mainly residential sections gives people a distinct community that is very much shaped by historical aspects of the region, along with current forward growth.

Much of this area began as privately owned, undeveloped and agricultural lots, until the section became a part of Edmonton around 1912.  The further structuring of these communities took place over the ensuing fifty or so years, with parts of the initial population flux coming from a street car line that ran from Downtown Edmonton into the Highlands region.  During the later development period in the 1960's the communities within Highlands were further subdivided to give residential housing to the growing population of the city.  Much of this design is currently evident within the area.

As an immediate suburb of the central Edmonton region, Highlands is close to LRT lines, and has good public transportation services through both rail and bus.  Nearby stops for the LRT include Stadium, Coliseum, and even Churchill Stations.  The individual communities are conducive to pedestrian and cycling travel, which makes the Highlands region fairly self contained for practical and recreational amenities.

This suburb of Edmonton is generally considered a very good place to raise a family.  Education in the area is well rated, with institution such as Eastglen School, Highlands School, and Mt. Royal School.  Higher learning facilities are also within this subdivision with the Concordia University College of Alberta and the Tegler Student Centre.

Residents in Highlands are very attracted to the number of outdoor recreations which are afforded to inhabitants.  The Highlands Golf Club is a big draw, as is the wilderness and river access of  Kinnaird Park.  These natural features can be found throughout the Highlands area and are often incorporated into the residential landscape for a more relaxed and rural atmosphere.

Residents also have the ability to enjoy shopping and dining in the nearby downtown section of Edmonton.  This provides culture with museums such as the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Royal Alexandria Museum.  Closer at hand, Rexall Place and the Commonwealth Arena have musical shows and sporting events that take place all year long.  Highlands is a good location for many people, with established communities that have a suburban feel, and good proximity to downtown commerce and entertainment.
