Description

The greater Westmount area is found to the west of North Central Edmonton and is comprised of several well-established communities situated to the south of Yellowhead Trail. The original parcel of land that makes up this sector was incorporated to Edmonton city in 1913, and the majority of the individual neighborhoods saw the greatest amount of development just after World War II.

While many of the sectors do follow an urban street grid, the greater Westmount area has a more suburban feel that is attractive to residents who prefer strong community culture.

The communities within the greater Westmount area include the actual neighborhood of Westmount, Dovercourt, Prince Charles, Sherbrooke, Inglewood, North Glenora, and Woodcroft. While the neighborhood structures do vary somewhat, they all share a more rural feel and the use of natural landscaping to generate a small village atmosphere. Although the feature of a central park area is not consistent in this sector, open land lots are utilized widely to create seclusion and safety.

Westmount is also the location of a number of historic and cultural attractions. This includes Coronation Park, TELUS World of Science, and the Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium. Nearby popular destinations are also the NAIT district and campus to the east and the current location of Royal Alberta Museum and McKinnon Ravine Park to the south. Westmount has an ideal location for many families and residents who enjoy cultural attractions and outdoor activities, but also want the benefits of living near the downtown region.

Many of the communities within Westmount grew from the need for more housing, especially for families, that arose with industrial shifts in the middle of the 1900s. This included a greater focus on airway shipping, academics, and businesses that supported Edmonton from within. The vision was a professional residential sector that could also allow parents to raise children in a culturally stimulating and safe environment. A number of schools within Westmount allow modern parents to do just that. Some of the institutions include Ross Sheppard High School, the Westglen School, the Prince Charles School, and the Coronation School. Edmonton Catholic Schools are also dominant in the district, giving parents a wide range of choices for well-ranked lessons.

The vision of a professional and family based community is still a positive aspect of the Westmount region. A large number of residents will commute into the city centre for employment, and this is made easier with the network of connecting bus lines across the sector. The Churchill Station LRT stop is about five kilometers to the southeast of Westmount, and also gives residents a greater range for traveling. Along with professionals and families, this area also has some student population and residents who work directly in the sector. Common employment fields include academics and education, healthcare, retail, and industrial segments such as shipping and fabrication.

Westmount residents represent a good cross-section of the Edmonton population, and this leads to a definite community culture and neighborhood integration for the area. As smaller developments within the urban setting, the Westmount communities are a safe and vibrant living space.
