The Windermere area is situated to the south west side of Southwest Edmonton with the North Saskatchewan River as the western border of this section and Anthony Henday Drive as the northern boundary. As one of the newer suburbs of the greater Edmonton area, Windermere is being developed to incorporate necessary residential and recreational space with preserve lands on the outskirts of the city. This development plan saw approval in 2004 and much of the construction in the communities is ongoing.

Within the larger Windermere district, three distinct sub-developments form the residential environment. These include Ambleside, the community of Windermere, and the Windermere Area, although several other communities are pending approval. While the modern development of this region has seen a fairly recent start, the history of the section dates back to the start of Edmonton.

This part of the North Saskatchewan River Valley was highly popular with homesteaders and traders in the late 1800's. It offered fertile land for farming, with a number of creeks and ravines within the sector which also provided good hunting grounds. As Edmonton developed more around the city centre and trapping gave way to oil and coal industries, some of the settlements were abandoned. Many farmers, however, maintained their lands, and continued to contribute to the agricultural richness of this outlying tract.

Some of the northern sections of Windermere along the river started modern settlement in the mid 1900's, although this development was slowly methodical and not as precisely planned as the modern proposal. However, the establishment of the River Ridge Golf and Country Club and the Windermere Golf and Country Club has helped to attract greater interest in this district. These recreational facilities are incorporated into the preserve lands and allow residents and visitors to both enjoy the outdoors and take advantage of fitness, spa, and dining facilities.

The Windermere region is also intended to be inviting to families, with safe neighborhoods for playing and sporting events, as well as commercial structures for practical needs and entertainment. The Currents of Windermere Shopping Centre is medially positioned within the district and lets residents have access to shopping, dining, and cinema.

Parents in Windermere will find that nearby educational facilities can accommodate all levels of schooling. Some of the institutions include the Johnny Bright School, the Esther Starkman School, and the Lillian Osborne High School.

Windermere has a diverse population that consists of professionals who commute into the city as well as residents who work in the area. Local professions include construction, education, healthcare, hospitality, and retail jobs. Access to the city centre is available through bus service, with stops and connecting lines that are positioned across the suburb. The nearby Leger Transit Centre also acts as a transfer stop for commuters, and drivers can get to Anthony Henday Drive with ease. Residents who work locally can make use of the network of pedestrian and bicycle walkways as well as the bus lines.
