Description

The Blackmud Creek community is one of the larger developments within the Blackmud suburb and is positioned just to the west of Calgary Trail and south of Ellerslie Drive. This section consists of homes, commercial zoning, and parts of the Blackmud Creek Ravine to create a unique living space with a very rural feel that is still close to modern amenities.

The Blackmud neighborhoods include Allard, Blackburne, Blackmud Creek, Callaghan, Chapelle Area, Heritage Valley Area, MacEwan, Richford, and Rutherford. The official foundation of this district is considered to have happened in 2006, although plans for the area were already being drawn up in the early 2000’s. Some of the land included private holdings and preserve grounds, but the growing need for residential housing eventually pushed the incorporation forward.

Since the Blackmud area is both historically and ecologically significant, plans for development were highly focused on building community and making environmentally sound construction choices. The previous residences within this area, from the late 1800’s forward, consisted of homesteaders, trappers, traders, and First Nations People. Although this represents a diverse population, the good hunting and fertile soil of the area allowed for shared interests and an integration of cultures. The proposals for the development of Blackmud utilized that framework in generating sub-divisions that are residential, commercial, and recreational.

The ecological concerns for Blackmud also presented a new structure to the layout of the region. Communities within this sector heavily favor pedestrian traffic and public transportation, and the use of foot paths that are separate from roadways figures strongly into the design. Preserve lands are largely left as a feature within the neighborhoods, and allocations for parks, ponds, and other natural attractions are also provided.

Educational facilities for the Blackmud suburb are also within the development plan. While Edmonton Public Schools will serve much of the district, institutions such as the Johnny Bright School, the Monsignor Fee Otterson School, and nearby Esther Starkman School are all well rated and able to accommodate many grades of teaching. Parents can use these local learning providers or utilize municipal bus services to access adjacent communities.

The Blackmud region is also the site of a proposed LRT station along the Heritage Valley Line, and this will increase commuting ease into the city centre. Bus lines are prevalent across the area, and individual neighborhoods have good well positioned stops both within and around the area.

For outdoor enthusiasts, this sector is rife with recreation. Blackmud Creek preserve lands are ideal for hiking and fishing, and Whitemud Ravine Park is also close by. The Jagere Ridge Golf Course is located to the west of the Blackmud suburb, and has rolling greens as well as club house facilities. Whitemud Creek Golf and RV Resort is another popular destination for camping and for play.

The Blackmud suburb represents an innovative melding of function and stewardship. It has resulted in communities that have a rural beauty and a close proximity to the city, with encouraging features for outdoor pursuits.
