Ottewell is one of the largest communities within the greater Bonnie Doon area and occupies the majority of the north eastern side of this suburb. This mainly residential neighborhood is well established, with a good majority of the construction and development of the Ottewell taking place between 1950 and 1960, which is reflected in the open street plan that utilizes some curved grids, as well as crescents and loops.

Bus stops within and around Ottewell let residents get to adjacent communities and also travel into the central and downtown Edmonton region. The Central Station LRT top is close to four kilometers to the west, but bus services will also help with this connection and facilitate the commuting process. Many Ottewell residents find that they are able to benefit from the Capilano Mall in the northeast corner of the neighborhood, as this will provide services and products from the practical to the recreational.

Ottewell is distinguished as a very family friendly environment, and the greatest amount of homes for sale in this subdivision are single family structures on private lots. Educational facilities in Ottewell are also quite comprehensive, including the Braemar School, Clara Tyner Elementary School, Ottewell Jr. High School, and the Austin O’Brien School. The community league also helps working parents with after-school and youth programs but organizes events for the entire neighborhood as well.
