Description

Garneu is situated in the south east quadrant of the University of Alberta area and incorporates parts of the campuses into the residential region. This is one of the older townships of the area, with the official status gained in the early 1900’s, although a large amount of the construction for Garneau happened much later in the 1960’s. In combination with the establishment of the university, the neighborhood began to become a prominent place for living in the midst of culture.

The community of Garneau has an open grid work pattern and is extremely pedestrian friendly. Sidewalks and cycling paths are well maintained along the tree lined avenues, and homes for sale in the area include single family structures, duplexes and town homes. Due to the proximity of this community to the University, Garneau homes are often rented to students who occupy a room, a floor or an entire home. Residential lots in Garneau are expertly landscaped with forested features so that residences have privacy and a peaceful atmosphere.

Although many university students and medical residents do inhabit this sector, Garneau is also considered to be family friendly as it is a safe and small neighborhood. The Garneau School sits to the north east of the quadrant, and extracurricular programs through the Mar-Mac Dance and Theatre Arts School are also close at hand.

Public transportation is also very accessible in this area, with bus stops across the Garneau neighborhood, and the Health Sciences Centre LTR Station located in the middle of the university campus. For local shopping and entertainment, a Sobeys is found on campus as well and the Garneau Cinema shows art films and regular fare. The City Arts Centre also runs community programs and events and can be found in Garneau Park.
